May Fishing Report – La Crosse, WI

An unseasonably warm start to spring has pushed water temperatures into the high 50s and even low 60s across much of the Upper Mississippi River around La Crosse. That early jump in temps has accelerated fish movement across the board—and it’s showing up in the bite.

Panfish (Crappies & Bluegills – Prime Time)
Crappies are already sliding into shallow backwaters, staging and spawning depending on location. We’re finding fish stacked on wood, inside turns, and warming bays, with some of the best action coming in just a few feet of water. Bluegills aren’t far behind, and with these warmer temps, we’re seeing them move up earlier than normal. Expect fast-paced action and a strong mix of eater-size fish with some true Mississippi River slabs mixed in.

Bass (Spawn Starting)
Bass are right on the edge of the spawn, with some fish already moving up and locking onto beds. Largemouth are pushing shallow into protected backwaters, while smallmouth are setting up around current breaks and hard-bottom areas. This is a great time to target aggressive fish before and during the spawn window.

Northern Pike
Pike are active and feeding after the spawn, cruising shallow weeds and warming flats. They’ve been aggressive and are a common bonus while targeting bass. May can often be the very best month of the year for catching numbers of these toothy critters on fast-moving baits!

Catfish (Early Flatheads Showing Up)
Channel catfish action continues to improve, but the bigger news—we’ve already put a few flatheads in the boat. That’s a clear sign of how early things are progressing this year. While the best flathead bite is still ahead, the season is definitely getting an early start, and we will likely be getting our guide season started for those by the middle of the month.

What to Expect This Month:

  • Accelerated spring patterns due to warm water temps
  • Shallow water fishing is heating up fast
  • Crappie and bluegill bite leading the charge
  • Early opportunities at pre-spawn and spawning bass
