April Mississippi River Fishing Report – La Crosse, WI | River Bent Outfitters

April kicks off a true transition period on the Mississippi River around La Crosse, WI. Recent snowmelt from up north has kept water levels elevated and cold, which has made the fishing tougher, but we’re now seeing the river slowly begin to drop and stabilize. As clarity improves, temperatures rise, and current slackens in backwaters and side channels, fishing will steadily pick up across the board.

Perch fishing remains a strong early-April option, especially in protected backwaters where fish are staging and feeding aggressively after their spawn cycle. Small jigs tipped with plastics or live bait on a drop shot or three-way rig continue to produce consistent bites. As water temps creep up, crappies and bluegills slide into predictable spring patterns—look for them relating to wood, shallow bays, and emerging vegetation. These panfish will only get more active as the month progresses.

Walleye action remains a highlight on the main river. Fish are transitioning to and from spawning areas and can be found along current seams, wing dams, and adjacent slack water. Jig-and-minnow combinations or plastics worked slowly near the bottom are key.

Smallmouth and largemouth bass, and northern pike, also begin to show up more consistently, especially during warmer stretches. Target largemouth and pike in shallow, weedy backwaters, while smallmouth bass will hold tighter to current breaks and rocky structure as they slowly migrate toward spawning grounds.

By mid to late April, channel catfish activity ramps up as water temperatures rise. Look for cats in deeper holes and slower current areas, especially near outside bends and timber. Fresh cut bait or nightcrawlers are reliable producers this time of year.

Overall, April is all about changing conditions on the Mississippi River. As water levels drop and stabilize, fishing opportunities expand daily. It’s a great time to get on the water and target a variety of species in one trip.
