Ice-out has already taken place across much of the Mississippi River backwaters around La Crosse, signaling the transition into early spring fishing patterns. Many shallow areas throughout the Mississippi River Backwaters have opened up, and more water will continue to become fishable as temperatures gradually warm.

One of the main patterns developing right now is the yellow perch pre-spawn and spawning movement. Schools of perch are beginning to group up in classic staging areas near backwater channels, sand flats, and areas close to deeper wintering holes. As the month progresses, more perch will move into slightly shallower water to spawn, creating some of the best perch fishing opportunities of the early open-water season. Small jigs, dropshots, and three way rigs with live bait will continue to be effective while fish remain in a cold-water feeding mode.
Crappies and bluegills are also starting to transition out of their winter locations. While the bite can still be a bit inconsistent early in the spring, warming trends and stable weather will gradually improve the panfish bite throughout March.
Another spring opportunity anglers will begin thinking about is lake sturgeon fishing on the Mississippi River. As water temperatures continue to rise, sturgeon will begin moving toward their traditional spring spawning areas. The sturgeon bite will continue improving as we move deeper into the spring season.
For anglers searching for a La Crosse fishing report, Mississippi River fishing conditions, or updates on Mississippi River backwaters fishing, the biggest story right now is the shift into open water and the start of the perch spawn.
Spring guided trips will soon be ramping up with River Bent Outfitters. If you’re planning to fish the Mississippi River this spring, now is a great time to secure a date before peak spring fishing arrives. 🎣
